ATO fraud security enhanced

When a taxpayer becomes a victim of identity, tax, or super fraud, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) may implement security safeguards on their account to prevent further harm.

While these measures are crucial for protecting sensitive information, they may require the affected taxpayer to contact the ATO each time they need to access their account, leading to potential inconvenience for both the taxpayer and their tax agents.

To enhance security and improve access to ATO online services, the ATO has recently upgraded its processes. Taxpayers who have been impacted must initially contact the ATO to gain access to their accounts. Afterward, they can establish a Strong online access strength to streamline future logins.

To set up a Strong online access strength, taxpayers should follow these steps:

  1. Set up myGovID: Begin by creating a myGovID with a Strong identity strength, which can be established using an Australian passport.
  2. Connect myGovID to myGov: Link your myGovID to your myGov account for seamless integration.
  3. Sign in with myGovID: Use your myGovID to log in to your myGov account.
  4. Access ATO online services: Navigate to ATO online services where you can manage your tax information.

Once taxpayers have set a Strong online access strength, they will no longer need to contact the ATO each time they wish to access their information. However, it’s important for impacted taxpayers to consistently use their Strong myGovID whenever accessing ATO online services; failing to do so may result in restricted access to protect their client information.

These enhancements not only facilitate easier access but also ensure that taxpayer information remains secure, allowing individuals to manage their accounts with confidence.
