A few words About us

Carey Group’s story is deeply rooted in regional Queensland, where we have proudly served communities for over 70 years. Since our founding in 1951, Carey Group has grown from a small family owned accounting practice in Ingham into a respected regional firm with offices across North and South East Queensland including Townsville, Cairns, Brisbane and Malanda.

Our Early Beginnings

Carey Group was founded by Brian Carey when he joined Larry Kelly’s accounting practice in Ingham in 1951. Brian’s commitment to quality service and community engagement quickly established the firm as a trusted local advisor. His sons John and Robert later joined the business, forming BJ Carey and Company and strengthening the family’s accounting legacy in the region.

In 1988 Joe Carey, continuing the family tradition, joined the firm. Together the Carey family cemented the firm’s reputation for dependable, client focused accounting and advisory services in regional Queensland.

Expansion and Evolution

Recognising the changing needs of clients Carey Group expanded in 2002 with the opening of the Townsville office. This new branch introduced specialised services such as financial planning and SMSF administration, marking an important step towards becoming a full service financial firm.

Between 2006 and 2016 Carey Group diversified its service offering and evolved its brand, trading as Carey Accountants, Carey Financial and Strategic SMSF. This evolution reflected our growing expertise and commitment to delivering comprehensive financial solutions to the communities we serve.

In 2016 the firm underwent a significant restructure, adopting the unified Carey Group brand. This change signalled a new chapter, offering integrated accounting, audit, financial planning, SMSF administration and business advisory services under one umbrella.

Strategic Growth and Regional Reach

Carey Group’s commitment to regional Queensland was further strengthened in 2017 with the acquisition of Shirvington Partners, enhancing our presence and expertise across Northern Queensland.

The 2019 opening of the newly renovated Townsville office, the firm’s central hub, provided a modern space to better serve clients and support the expanding team. That same year Matt Thomson joined as CEO and Managing Partner, bringing fresh leadership while honouring the firm’s family values.

In 2021 Carey Group celebrated 70 years of service to regional Queensland. The company continued its growth through mergers with Indigo Financial Services and Barrier Reef Accounting, broadening its capabilities and extending its reach into Far North Queensland and Brisbane.

Adding to our expertise, Greg Stanton joined as a Partner in the Cairns office. With his strong background in construction and small business, Greg’s presence strengthens Carey Group’s commitment to supporting diverse industries in regional Queensland.
